The South African Safaris: During the 1990s, I was privileged to take three photographic safaris in South Africa, mostly in the regions around Kruger Park. Riding in an open Land Rover with an experienced guide, we were able to get quite close to wildlife in their natural environment. All of these were shot with Nikon 35mm cameras using color negative film, generally of 125 ISO. Recently, I have been able to scan these old 35mm negatives to create the enlarged digital negatives for this series. I plan to add more of these photographs over the coming months and years. Production of any monochromatic image from the real world involves special challenges to render subtle chromatic aspects into the most attractive tonal gradations.
